Originally created in the Victorian era, the Chelsea became a staple until World War I. In 1932, the English Chelsea boot was adapted into a sturdier design to be used as a work boot for Australian stockmen. The FEIT Chelsea boot draws on this hard-working heritage, built with the FEIT hand sewn Goodyear construction and a rugged Vibram® Gumlite outsole. The FEIT Chelsea boot has a one-piece upper built from a single piece of semi-cordovan leather, handstitched at the heel, and a pull tab is applied by 8 hand stitches.
Historically, cordovan leather, made from the buttocks part of a horse skin, has been used only for luxury dress shoes. For our FEIT shoes we use the entire skin - hence the name "semi-cordovan." The leather is tanned slowly, nourished with natural oils, and shaved. A century ago, when horses were still a driving force behind transportation, hides were plentiful. Now they are extremely scarce and difficult to come by.
The use of this highly luxurious and elevated skin allows the foot to breathe and, because it is much softer, does not require breaking in.
All FEIT Hikers are made from start to finish by one master craftsman using a hand sewn Goodyear construction, whereby the one-piece upper of the boot is sewn to a welt, which is then sewn to a leather midsole. The sole is then filled with cork and a bamboo shank stabilizer is added. Finally, a Vibram outsole is cemented to the midsole using a natural, water-based glue.
Goodyear construction ensures all FEIT shoes can be resoled.
Each pair of FEIT shoes comes with an extra set cork and buffalo leather insoles to assist with in-between sizing. The additional leather insole can be used alone, or the cork can be inserted underneath the leather for extra padding. If you are between sizes, you can either size up and use the included insoles, or size down and use no additional insoles.
